talking trash
According to the US Census Bureau, the population of St. Johns County increased by an astounding 43% between 2010 and 2020. Rapid growth can create economic opportunities but it also comes with a multitude of problems that seriously threaten our waterways.
As a general rule, more people equals more pollution. Single-use plastics and marine debris have created a global environmental crisis with severe impacts to water quality, human health, and marine life.
We are not going to recycle our way out of this one.
It's time to look at the facts and make changes.
WATCH THIS VIDEO!
It's short and scary.
Microplastics, Recycling, and bioplastics
mICroplastics
UGH. They're everywhere!
Microplastics are defined as any plastic particle or fiber less than 5 mm in size. They are found in air, land, and water - even our tap water! They have been recently found in marine animals and humans.
recycling
Ignorance is NOT bliss.
Do you actually know what can be recycled? Not a lot. It's best to REFUSE, REDUCE, REUSE, and RETHINK.
BIOPLASTICS
bioplastics
Don't let them fool you!
Many restaurants use bioplastics they claim can be quickly recycled. In fact, SJC does not have a bioplastic recycling center making the chance for bioplastic recycling highly unlikely.
Try to beat me with better than a 4 out of 6!

Step Up, Speak out
Great job on your clean up! Now turn your actions into advocacy by contacting your state and local law makers.
Did you know...?
Not only does Florida not have a statewide law to regulate single-use plastic/foam, but Florida has preemption laws that prevent counties and cities from taking action to reduce certain single-use plastic and foam. Basically, there is a bans on plastic bans! In July of 2019, the people of St. Augustine Beach passed an ordinance to ban restaurants and shops from giving out single-use plastic straws, bags, and foam containers, but because of the preemption law, St. Augustine Beach was forced to repeal the ordinance. 😫

Write a quick email to Governor Desantis at GovernorRon.Desantis@eog.myflorida.com or call his office directly at (850) 717-9337. Tell him that local governments should be able to ban single-use plastics.
Here is a sample email/ script to get you started. Feel free to copy and paste this into your email, but be sure to modify it to make it unique. You can add information about what you've learned about plastic pollution and your cleanup experience.
Dear _____,
My name is ___ and I live in ____. I am very concerned about plastic pollution, and I am outraged that there are preemptions in the state of Florida that prevent my town from passing ordinances to reduce certain single use plastics.
Plastic pollution is a threat to our oceans and marine life, to human health, to climate, and to our tourism based economy. My friends and I did a cleanup where we picked up ______ pounds of trash - most of which was plastic. Local municipalities should have home rule power to address this issue. I would like you to support a bill to repeal the preemptions on regulations regarding single-use plastic bags and polystyrene foam.
Sincerely,
____________
